Many of the kidney patients I help have benefited from National Kidney Foundation programs, and I support their cause. I know that charitable organizations depend on the millions of dollars they receive from donated cars. (I was there on business.) I was told that they would pay the fees but that there was nothing they could do to prevent my donated van from passing from owner to unregistered owner at auctions and that I can never be free of the worry of what the drivers might do in/with my van that I could be held responsible for. On April 3, I found the foundation's car donation booth in the exhibition hall at the National Kidney Foundation Conference in Dallas. Reed but was passed to "Goss." He informed me that they "don't deal with private impounds." I called the Motor Vehicle Administration and talked to Deborah, who said to call Leah Reed at the Prince George's County abandoned vehicles office. I called Claudia again at the foundation and had to leave a message because she was unavailable. I checked with Vincent again in February of this year, and he said the foundation was supposed to be mailing him the name and address of the new owner, and, until they do, he will continue to hold me responsible. I called Claudia at the foundation again in December, and she said she'd call the towing company to resolve the problem. I called the number on the Prince George's County government letter repeatedly and never got through. He also said that the car had already gone to auction again and had another owner. I checked with Vincent at A&S Towing in November, who said that I still owed him money and that I would never be able to register another vehicle in Maryland if I didn't pay him. She did send a letter to the towing company asking them to remove any and all liabilities from me. I then called the foundation, thinking there had been a mistake, and Claudia said she'd take care of it. I began by calling the towing company listed on the letter and spoke with Vincent, who wasn't interested in my little problem. I wasn't too worried because I had saved copies of everything. In October 2002 I received a certified letter from the Prince George's County government informing me that my van had been abandoned and impounded and that I owed towing and storage fees. I made the donation in July 2001 and am still dealing with the aftermath. The foundation instructed me to leave the buyer line blank when I turned the title over to them, and I dutifully obeyed. I chose the National Kidney Foundation because I work with dialysis patients.
